<유리병에 담아 보낸 것>은 작가가 한 친구에게 쓴 사과 편지의 형식을 취한다. 같은 친구에게 여러 차례 편지를 보냈음에도 그 내용을 전혀 기억하지 못한 경험에서 이 작품은 출발한다. 기억은 분명 존재했지만, 다시 떠올리려 할 때마다 이미 지워진 것처럼 느껴졌고 작가는 이를 쓰기와 지워짐이 반복되는 상태로 인식하게 된다.
이러한 기억의 양상은 파도에 의해 조금씩 침식되는 해안선의 변화와 겹쳐진다. 작품의 배경이 되는 장소는 작가가 오랜 시간 살아온 집 주변의 바다로, 그곳의 풍경은 기후 위기의 영향 속에서 서서히 그러나 분명하게 변하고 있다. 그 변화는 쉽게 감지되지 않지만, 어느 순간 이전의 형태로 되돌릴 수 없게 된다는 점에서 기억의 소실과 해안의 침식은 같은 시간의 선상 위에 놓인다.
작가는 편지를 모래 위에 남김으로써, 그것이 끝내 지워질 것임을 알면서도 쓰는 행위를 반복한다. 파도에 의해 사라지는 문장은 도달하지 못한 사과이자, 붙잡을 수 없는 기억의 잔여이다. 기록되자마자 사라지는 이 쓰기는 기억을 보존하려는 시도이면서 동시에 그것이 머무를 수 없음을 인정하는 행위이기도 하다. <유리병에 담아 보낸 것>은 남겨지지 않는 기록과 서서히 변형되는 풍경을 겹쳐 놓으며, 사라짐이 어떻게 축적되는지를 드러낸다.
Worn Letters takes the form of an apology letter written by the artist to a friend. The work originates from the experience of having sent multiple letters to the same friend while retaining no memory of their contents whatsoever. The memories clearly existed, yet each time the artist tried to recall them, they felt already erased — leading the artist to perceive this as a state in which writing and erasure continuously repeat.
This pattern of memory overlaps with the gradual erosion of a coastline worn away by waves. The place that serves as the work's backdrop is the sea surrounding the home where the artist has lived for a long time — a landscape that is slowly yet unmistakably changing under the influence of the climate crisis. That change is not easily perceived, but in the sense that it reaches a point where it can no longer be reversed to its former shape, the loss of memory and the erosion of the shoreline come to rest on the same line of time.
The artist repeats the act of writing by leaving letters on the sand, knowing all along that they will eventually be erased. Sentences dissolved by the waves are an apology that never arrived, and the remnants of a memory that cannot be held. This writing — recorded only to disappear — is simultaneously an attempt to preserve memory and an act of acknowledging that it cannot stay. Worn Letters layers records that leave no trace over a landscape in slow transformation, revealing how disappearance accumulates.
