Sound From Somewhere

There are very old things that arrive before me without warning. Things like a memory box buried beneath a tree in front of the classroom, together with classmates, upon graduating elementary school (it never actually happened — but inside there would have been letters written to an imagined future self, and small fragments preserving that time; the grown version of me may no longer remember where it was buried). Things like the familiar view through the car window, seen over and over on the way home (now and then, a building changes, and there is the light it gives off). Things like the many forms of voices heard but let pass (one of her nagging lines — "You just haven't read enough books" — or the sound of laughter).

In the midst of letting everything go, a noise that places me on a specific timeline. It is close to a signal. Perhaps a passage into another world. Through it, I leave — but where?
